Dodging is a recurring technique in every installment of the Punch-Out!! series. It can be used to evade most oncoming attacks. Dodging usually leaves an opponent open to stuns, which makes it one of the most important moves in the Punch-Out!! series.

Usages[]

Punch-Out!! (arcade)[]

Players can dodge left or right by moving the joystick in the respective direction. Most opponents' attacks can be dodged in either direction. However, Pizza Pasta's crouch-challenge move can only be dodged if the player holds the joystick right while they are frozen in place. There are also two instances in which attacks cannot be evaded by dodging; Glass Joe's right cross in Title Defense Mode cannot be dodged and Pizza Pasta can hit the player while they are dodging towards the end of the fight. Additionally, Piston Hurricane's jab combo can be dodged, but is much easier to block.

Super Punch-Out!! (arcade)[]

Players can dodge left or right by moving the joystick in the respective direction. Although most attacks can be dodged in either direction, Bear Hugger's earclap Dragon Chan's flying kick, and both of Super Macho Man's spin punches cannot be dodged; instead the player must use the new duck mechanic.

Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!/Punch-Out!! featuring Mr. Dream[]

Players can dodge left or right by pressing the respective button on the Control Pad. Pressing up or in the opposite direction on the Control Pad will let Little Mac return to the center quicker than a regular dodge. All attacks can be evaded by dodging, but some can be countered instead for a stun or a star, such as Great Tiger's counter-punch and Piston Honda's jabs respectively. The player can also dodge while they are "tired," meaning their heart counter is at zero.

Super Punch-Out!! (SNES)[]

Players can dodge left or right by pressing the respective button on the Control Pad. Most attacks can be avoided by dodging, but it will sometimes cause the player to miss an opportunity to counter, making blocking a more effective strategy in certain situations. Some attacks require the player to dodge a certain direction in order to successfully evade them, such as Mad Clown's backhand and the first part of his juggle.

Punch-Out!! (Wii)[]

Dodging can be performed in one of three ways, depending on the control scheme used by the player:

  • Wii Remote and Nunchuk: Press left or right on the Control Stick to dodge in the respective direction.
  • Wii Remote only: Press left or right on the Control Pad to dodge in the respective direction.
  • Wii Balance Board: Apply pressure to the left or right of the board to dodge in the respective direction.

Most attacks can be dodged, but can also be countered for the chance to earn a star. King Hippo's earclap, Bear Hugger's signature move Bear Hug, and both variations of Super Macho Man's clothesline cannot be dodged. Additionally, some Exhibition Challenges require the player to not dodge during the fight, whether it be not dodging a specific move or not dodging at all. These opponents are Glass Joe (not dodging at all), Von Kaiser (not dodging at any fake uppercuts), Bear Hugger (not dodging at any fake Bear Hug), and Mr. Sandman (not dodging at all).

Doc Louis's Punch-Out!![]

Dodging can be performed in one of three ways, depending on the control scheme used by the player:

  • Wii Remote and Nunchuk: Press left or right on the Control Stick to dodge in the respective direction.
  • Wii Remote only: Press left or right on the Control Pad to dodge in the respective direction.

Doc Louis will occasionally give the player cues to dodge his attacks. Most of these attacks can be countered for a star.
