Same results every time. The world of fighting is a harsh one, isn't it?
~ Dragon Chan (SNES)

Dragon Chan is a recurring opponent in the Punch-Out!! series. He first appeared in the arcade version of Super Punch-Out!!, and later in the SNES game of the same title. Dragon Chan hails all the way from Hong Kong and his Signature Move is a flying kick.

Super Punch-Out!! (1984)[]

Contender[]

F02 - dragon chan

Dragon Chan makes his debut in Super Punch-Out!! as the second opponent. During the opening of the fight against him, Asian music is played before the announcer introduces Dragon Chan. He sometimes jumps to a corner, then another, and then does a swinging kick at his opponent's face, which knocks down his opponent with one-hit. To avoid this, players must use the duck button to duck and dodge Dragon Chan's kick. He is also a very defensive fighter, throwing attacks on his own much less frequently and not being able to be stunned after throwing a normal attack. He also has a special guard, where instead of only guarding his face or his body, he can cover his entire body with one arm and block one side of his face with the other, requiring you to use the right arm to punch him in the face if you want to hit him while he isn't stunned, which you should be aiming to do, since he can't be stunned except after using his flying kick. Moreover, he doesn't get up from a knockdown as easy, and will usually stay down after getting knocked down for the first time. He's one of two opponents to not have any palette swap, the other being Bear Hugger.

Attacks:[]
  • Jab: Dragon Chan throws a left/right jab aimed at the face. Can be dodged, blocked or ducked.
  • Body Jab: Dragon Chan throws a right jab aimed at the body. Can be dodged or blocked.
  • Counter Body Jab: Dragon Chan may do this whenever you throw a right hook. He dodges right and hits you with a quick right jab aimed at the body. Can be dodged or blocked.
  • Counter Body Jab Alt: Dragon Chan may do this whenever you throw a left jab or right cross. He blocks it and hits you with a quick right jab aimed at the body. Can be dodged.
  • Counter Jab: Dragon Chan may do this whenever you throw an uppercut. He dodges right and hits you with a quick left jab. This cannot be avoided, as you're too committed to your uppercut to dodge or block.
  • Counter Jab Alt: Dragon Chan may do this whenever you throw an body blow. He blocks it and hits you with a quick left jab. Can be avoided.
  • Flying Kick: He jumps to one side of the ring, to both of the ropes besides you, then back onto the ground and throws an instant knockdown kick. Can be done from both sides. Must be ducked.

Title Defense[]

Dragon Chan TD arcade sprite

After defeating Super Macho Man and becoming the WVBA World Champion, Dragon Chan and every other boxer will now become the top ranked challenger and will have new attacks as well as a new outfit. Dragon Chan in particular increases his offense, throwing extremely long, rapid strings of jabs to both your face and body from both sides that can't be punished, even if you dodge them, requiring you to counter them before they're thrown by throwing the correct punches. His flying kick also gets an upgrade, as he can switch up the timing of when he throws his kick to mess you up, and does the move way faster, along with doing the move twice in a row. However, he has a weakness: Because his strings of jabs are so long, if you ever get your KO meter full, you can keep throwing KO punches and he won't be able to dodge them because he can't dodge while doing a move. However this only applies to his first Rematch because by the time you fight him a 3rd time he becomes very defensive, switching his guard around and throwing quick punches. He also gets up from a knockdown much easier than in his first fight.

Can not be avoided.
This cannot be avoided, as you're too committed to your attack to dodge or block.
  • Super Flying Kick: He jumps to one side of the ring, skipping the part where he jumps onto the ropes entirely. He'll repeatedly say "Houya, houya..." for a random amount of time before yelling "Ay-HWAA!!"/"Cha!" and quickly swinging one instant knockdown flying kick at you, followed immediately by "Cha!" and a second instant knockdown flying kick. Can be done from both sides. Must be ducked.

Super Punch-Out!! (1994)[]

Dragon Chan SNES sprite

In the SNES version of Super Punch-Out!!, he now wears dark blue pants, a red belt, and blue boxing gloves. His swinging kick is slightly faster than before. He also regains strength through meditation when instructed by his cornerman. He has two types of punches: normal jabs and slap punches to the body. If you counter the slap punch with a jab to the face, he will be stunned. If you counter his jab with a hook you can also stun him. During his flying kick, he hops from back left to back right, then front left, then kicks, unlike in his previous appearance where he lands on the ground for the third hop. His coach does not speak English, instead speaking Chinese. When instructed by his cornerman, Dragon Chan throws three kicks at his opponent, which don't cause one knock downs to his opponent like his flying kick does. He is a palette swap of Heike Kagero.

Moves:

  • Jab: Dragon Chan throws a jab. Cannot be low punched.
  • Body Blow: A slap punch to the body. Cannot be ducked or low blocked.
  • Dragon Fly Kick: Dragon Chan jumps to the player's right, then to the left, then does a wide kick. This kick will result in the player being instantly knocked down. This must be ducked.
  • Triple Kick: When the cornerman says something in Chinese and Dragon Chan repeatedly shifts his guard up and down, he jumps and does a kick three times from a random side. Dodge to the opposite side he is on.
  • Heal Stopper: When the cornerman says something different and Dragon Chan flashes while getting into a meditating stance, he meditates to recover some of his health. This can be interrupted by punching him.

Dizzy Knockdown: Dragon Chan moves to the left, then to the right, then to the center. Punch him when he is centered.

Rule Infractions[]

As per the unified rules of boxing established by the Association of Boxing Commissions and Combat Sports:

  • Chan breaks 3 rules in regards to him kicking:
    • Jumping attacks are illegal in boxing.
    • Kicks are not allowed in boxing.
    • Dragon Chan jumps off the ropes to perform the attack. The ropes are only there to prevent the boxers from falling out of the ring.
  • His attire violates 4 rules:
    • Instead of boxing shorts, he wears gi pants.
      • They go below his knees, which makes it harder for the referee to determine low blows.
    • Instead of boxing boots or boxing shoes, he wears slippers.
    • His belt is a non-regulation accessory and is therefore illegal, even if it does provide a line of demarcation for the waist.
  • Dragon Chan will restore some of his health when he meditates. Prolonging the match isn't allowed.

Dragon Chan has 8 infractions.

Trivia[]

  • Dragon Chan is the only fighter from the arcade version of Super Punch-Out!! who did not appear in Punch-Out!! (Wii).
  • He and Piston Hurricane are the only boxers who's home console apperance is the SNES

  • Dragon's theme is based on the theme for Big Trouble in Little China.
    • Dragon's theme for his arcade appearance, however, is based on the theme for Bruce Lee's Enter The Dragon.
  • His physical appearance is modeled after Bruce Lee, while his name is a reference to Jackie Chan (Who started his movie career as an extra and stunt artist in some of Bruce Lee's movies and was also given roles where he was promoted as the next Bruce Lee as Chan Yuen Lung) whose stage name in Asia is Chéng Lóng (成龍; lit. "becoming the dragon").
    • On top of this, Dragon Chan's signature white karate-gi and black slippers resembles what Jackie Chan's portrayed character Thomas would later wear in the NES/Famicom version of the Spartan X game.
  • In addition to drawing inspirations from Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan, Dragon Chan could also be an allusion to Bruceploitation, an exploitation film subgenre that attempted to cash in on Lee's popularity after his death in 1973.
  • In Super Punch-Out!! (SNES), the perfect time against Dragon Chan is 0'07"30 in the NTSC version, first achieved by Akiteru, and 0'07"13 in the PAL version, first achieved by Nolan414.

  • 気沈丹田 (Qì chén dāntián) refers to a form of deep breathing exercise. the "沈" (chén) means "to sink", referring to the belly compressing with breath, done to increase strength in the 丹田 (Dāntián), a lower abdominal region below the belly button, where Qì is accumulated. Spiritual martial artists, particularly of Tai Chi (太极拳), use this technique to become stronger.
