Little Mac ducking Don Flamenco's Rose Flurry.

Ducking is a recurring technique in the Punch-Out!! series. It was introduced in Super Punch-Out!! (arcade) and has been in every game since, excluding Punch-Out!! (Micro vs. System). It can be used to evade attacks that can't be dodged or blocked. However, it does not allow the player to evade most uppercuts nor attacks where the opponent punches straight down.

Usages[]

Super Punch-Out!! (arcade)[]

Players can pull upwards on the joystick in order to duck. Ducking is necessary to evade Bear Hugger's earclap, Dragon Chan's flying kick, and Super Macho Man's spin punches.

Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!/Punch-Out!! featuring Mr. Dream[]

Ducking can be performed by rapidly pressing down on the Control Pad twice. Unlike the previous Punch-Out!! game, all attacks can be dodged, so ducking is not necessary.

Super Punch-Out!! (SNES)[]

Ducking can be performed by pressing down on the Control Pad once. It is required in order to evade Heike Kagero's hair attack, Mad Clown's grab and ball attacks, both variations of Super Macho Man's Spin Punch, Hoy Quarlow's spinning backhand punch, and the two quick jabs that come after Nick Bruiser's OHKD Jumping Haymaker. It is also easiest, but not necessary, to duck in order to evade all three uppercuts from Mr. Sandman's Triple Running Uppercut.

Punch-Out!! (Wii)[]

Ducking can be performed in one of three ways, depending on the control scheme used by the player:

  • Wii Remote and Nunchuk: Press down on the Control Stick.
  • Wii Remote only: Press down on the Control Pad.
  • Wii Balance Board: Apply pressure to the middle of the board with both feet.

Ducking is necessary in order to avoid King Hippo's earclap, Bear Hugger's signature move Bear Hug, and Super Macho Man's signature move Triple Clothesline. However, there are numerous attacks where ducking will cause the player to have to evade another attack or miss a Star Punch opportunity, such as Don Flamenco's Rose Flurry attack.

Additionally, some opponents have Exhibition Challenges requiring the player not to duck in order to pass them, whether it be not ducking at all during a fight or not ducking a specific attack. These opponents are Glass Joe, Bear Hugger, Mr. Sandman and Donkey Kong.

Doc Louis's Punch-Out!![]

Ducking can be performed in one of two ways, depending on the control scheme used by the player:

  • Wii Remote and Nunchuk: Press down on the Control Stick.
  • Wii Remote only: Press down on the Control Pad.

Doc Louis will occasionally give the player cues to duck his attacks. Most of these moves can be evaded or countered by other means, but ducking is required in order to evade Doc's Delayed Clothesline attack.
