Getting Up from a knockdown by in

Little Mac Getting Up from a knockdown by King Hippo in Punch-Out!! (NES).

Getting Up is when a boxer gets up onto their feet after a knockdown. If a boxer does not manage to get up by the time the Referee counts to 10, the boxer is considered knocked out (KO). Urgent-sounding music plays if the player is down, while more victorious music will play if the opponent is down. The player needs to mash the punch buttons to get up. If the opponent is down in the Wii version, Little Mac can mash 1/2 or shake the Wii Remote and Nunchuck to recover his health as long as the opponent is down: this ability is paused if the opponent attempts to get up.

List of Get Up Animations[]

Punch-Out!! (Wii)[]

Little Mac: Climbs the ropes back up.

Glass Joe: Gets up quickly and runs back to the center of the ring in a fighting stance.

Von Kaiser: Gets up slowly as clanking metal sounds occur, then hits himself. In Title Defense, he hits himself again and does his signature instant knockdown move.

Disco Kid: Groans and lifts his head before getting up and resuming his stance.

King Hippo: Rubs his stomach as he roars and launches himself off the ropes.

Piston Hondo: Gets up and says "Mada mada!" ("I'm not done yet!") or "Mou ippon!" ("Another go!")

Bear Hugger: Shakes himself off as he pushes himself up. His squirrel helps him get up by jumping onto his stomach in Title Defense.

Great Tiger: Lifts his head and says, "Oha, maiṁ kahāɱ hūɱ?" ("Ohhh, where am I?")

Don Flamenco: Gets up and grunts.

Aran Ryan: Laughs and gets up slowly. Always gets up at 7.

Soda Popinski: Drinks a single drop of his soda and immediately springs to his feet with a roar.

Bald Bull: Gets up and walks toward Mac while snorting like a bull.

Super Macho Man: Hoists himself up and grunts before getting up quickly.

Mr. Sandman: Slams the canvas, roars, and punches his gloves together.

Donkey Kong: Shakes himself off and gets up.

A fighter may also fail to get up properly, briefly rising up from the canvas before falling down again. The referee pauses his count during these instances, before resuming where he left off.

Trivia[]

  • It is unknown why Glass Joe usually fails to get up at the count of 6, and whether it is intentional by the developers or not.
