Mario is an Italian-American plumber and adventurer who works as the referee in Punch Out!! (1987).

Mario is Nintendo's mascot, originating from the Donkey Kong arcade game, alongside Donkey Kong and Pauline. He is most well-known for his appearances in various platforming games, as well as Mario Kart racing games and as a fighter in the Super Smash Bros. series.

Mario is mentioned during Little Mac's discussion with Don Flamenco when he makes a comment about Mario's hair. Instead of his usual overalls, Mario is seen wearing a white, long sleeved shirt with black pants. He kept his signature red cap.

In Punch-Out!! (Wii), he is referenced by Doc Louis during Donkey Kong's round intermission in this quote: "Listen up, son! If you're havin' trouble... Maybe I should call my plumber! Ha ha ha!"

Trivia

• In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, an Event Match references to Mario's appearance as the referee: the match is over but a wireframe Little Mac won't stop attacking a defenseless Little Mac, and you play as Mario (Fire Mario Alternate to resemble the referee color scheme) to KO Wireframe Mac.
• In the Super Mario games, Mario is voiced by Charles Martinet, who also provided the voices of every fighter in Super Punch-Out!! on the SNES.
• According to an Iwata Asks interview, Makoto Wada designed and added Mario's referee sprites to the NES game without permission, and they made it to the final game unchecked.
• In The Super Mario Bros. Movie, where Mario plays a starring role, various Punch Out!! have portraits, such as Glass Joe and Von Kaiser, in a pizzeria named Punch Out!! Pizza. This could suggest that the Punch Out!! and Super Mario worlds are canonically interconnected.
