This article is a quality article.
Mr. Sandman is a recurring opponent in the Punch-Out!! series. He typically appears as the champion of a particular circuit. His signature move is the Dreamland Express.
Appearances[]
Punch-Out!! (1984)[]
Mr. Sandman made his first appearance as the WVBA World Champion in the original Punch-Out!!. He fights in an almost identical manner to the other boxers, but is much stronger, more accurate, and nimble. There's no way to fake him out and get a punch in. Additionally, when he's knocked down, he can get back up much stronger. The player will have to wait for an opening and then punch him. He can also use unstoppable combinations that the player will have to dodge before they can start hitting him again. After defeating him the first time, the player becomes the new champion, you'll then get to fight him again where he'll have a new outfit when he faces you the second time.
He is a palette swap of Bald Bull.
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!/Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream (1987 & 1990)[]
Mr. Sandman returned in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, being ranked #1 in the World Circuit. He sports the ability to guard himself whilst stunned and possesses unpredictable punching behavior. He also has a new special attack called the "Razor Uppercut," in which he swiftly unleashes three uppercuts in a row that are much quicker and stronger than his usual uppercuts. Just before he uses this technique, he will focus on blocking Little Mac's jabs and flash briefly to signal the attack. He is also one of the few characters in the game that can break out of a stun too fast for an uppercut to land into it. It is also impossible to throw jabs at him when he's stunned as he will automatically guard his face, so he can only take damage from body blows in this situation.
In terms of strategy, the player's main concerns are negating Mr. Sandman's rolling jabs, which can be done by either dodging or blocking them during the first round, and the Razor Uppercut. After Mr. Sandman finishes his jabs, Mac must attempt to jab Sandman himself. Sandman will dodge, and immediately counter with a hook, which Mac can counter to stun him and leave him available for body blows for a few seconds. When Sandman regains awareness, Mac must repeat the pattern. If Sandman starts blocking jabs, he will soon execute his Razor Uppercut.
He is a palette swap of Bald Bull and shares his laughing sound effect.
Attacks:
- Jab: Mr. Sandman rolls his fists, then throws a jab which can be dodged, ducked or blocked. He will counter with this if he blocks your body blow after the initial jabs.
- Hook: Mr. Sandman throws a quick hook which can be evaded in the same way as the jab. He will counter with this if he dodges your jab after the initial jabs.
- Uppercut:Mr. Sandman throws one uppercut. This can be dodged or ducked. It has a delay so don't dodge too quick. It is also similar to the one from Bald Bull but slower.
- Razor Uppercut: Mr. Sandman will stay still, then after moving forward suddenly and flashing, he throws three fast uppercuts. Little Mac cannot punch him after the third one if any hit him. Mr. Sandman will do this when he gets up in Round 2 or 3, or when Little Mac gets knocked down at 1:59 in Round 1 or later.
Super Punch-Out!! (1994)[]
Mr. Sandman appears again in Super Punch-Out!! (SNES), but only as the Major Circuit champion. Because of his lower rank, he is notably less challenging than he was in his past appearances. He has a move similar to that of Bald Bull, where he shuffles his arms before hitting Little Mac with jabs: two on one side, then one on the other side. He also shuffles his feet quickly before performing a powerful uppercut. When the player knocks Mr. Sandman down twice, his cornerman yells, "Give him full power now, champ!" and he will change the order of his attacks. His Razor Uppercut still works in the same manner as in his Punch-Out!! (NES) appearance, but is a little slower in this game. Additionally, he also retains the ability to guard himself while stunned from his previous appearance.
He is a palette swap of Bald Bull and is voiced by Charles Martinet.
Moves:
- Hook: Mr. Sandman throws a hook. Cannot be low blocked.
- Body Blow: Mr. Sandman hits the body. Cannot be ducked or low blocked.
- Uppercut: Mr. Sandman does an uppercut. Cannot be blocked.
- Shuffle Uppercut: Mr. Sandman shuffles his feet, then throws an uppercut. In his "Give him full power now, champ!" state, he will do three uppercuts instead of one.
- Triple Jab: Mr. Sandman shuffles his arms, then does two jabs with one arm and one which cannot be blocked with the other.
Dizzy Knockdown: Mr. Sandman will slide to the back, then horizontally, then to the center while spinning. Punch him when he is in the center.

Punch-Out!! (2009)[]
Cutscene Theme: Theme: Music after Fight:
Mr. Sandman appears in the Wii title as the WVBA World Champion for the first time since his earliest appearance in Punch-Out!! (arcade). His fighting scheme is now closer to his first two appearances to fit his rank. Like all the other fighters, he received an updated, unique redesign. In addition to this, he has two new overhead punch moves and the ability to fake out Mac before he punches. He usually uses his fake-out move before his classic triple-uppercut combo, which was renamed from "Razor Uppercut" to "Dreamland Express." Much like his previous appearances, he guards his face when stunned.
In his pre-match cutscene, it is shown that Mr. Sandman has beaten every other opponent in the game (excluding Donkey Kong) by KO. As a nod to his character's theme, Zs will come out of his head when he is punched. If Mac loses to him, Mr. Sandman will walk a couple of steps, causing a huge knock on the floor, and then face the crowd with a hefty laugh.
He is voiced by Riley Inge in this title.
Contender[]
Stars:
- Counter his overhead with a jab.
- Counter his delayed overhead with a jab.
- Counter his right hook with a left punch.
- Counter his left hook with a right jab.
- Land a delayed punch after his right hook. Left hooks will not work.
- Land a delayed hit after his left hook. Right hooks will not work.
- Hook him after the Dreamland Express.
- Jab him on his "Boo!" taunt.
- Land 8 hooks on Mr. Sandman after dodging the Dreamland Express. Only works after his fifth knockdown.
Moves:
- Left Overhead: Sandman throws an overhead punch with his left hand. The window to react is very small. It can also be countered with the right timing. It can be dodged and cannot be ducked.
- Stand Still (Right Overhead): Sandman throws a delayed overhead punch with his right hand. He shouts "Stand still!" before punching. Trying to dodge it right when you see it will result in Little Mac getting hit upon returning to the center. It can be dodged and cannot be ducked.
- Right Hook: Sandman throws a hook with his right hand. He ducks to his right before he punches. It can be either ducked or dodged.
- Night, Night (Left Hook): Sandman ducks to his left, then throws a delayed hook with his left hand. He shouts "Night, night!" before punching. It can be either ducked or dodged.
- Boo!: Sandman's taunt. He simply shouts "Boo!" at the player. He can do this once or twice before his Dreamland Express, and also rarely does it during other parts of the fight, after which it is followed by multiple overheads.
- Dreamland Express: Sandman's signature move. He steps to the back of the ring and shouts "Afraid?!" He might do one or two "Boo!" taunts, or none, before he steps back to the center and throws three fast, powerful, alternating uppercuts. It can be dodged and cannot be ducked.
Instant Knockdown Tricks:
- Use a Star Punch when he "BOO!"s you his first Dreamland Express uppercut. This also works with his standard "BOO!" taunt, though this requires a frame perfect blocked punch before the star punch is thrown.
- Use a Star Punch as he's throwing his first Dreamland Express uppercut.
Instant Knockout Trick:
- Use a 3-Star Punch when he BOO!!s you his first Dreamland Express.
Infinite Combo Trick:
Dodge his last uppercut early in his Dreamland Express, then counter. This time, he'll be stunned infinitely until the player either knocks him down or jabs him out of the stun if they dodge early enough. This will not work in Title Defense.
Stun Limits:
- His Left Overhead: 1 jab, 4 hooks
- His Right Overhead: 1 jab, 5 hooks
- His Right Hook: 1 jab, 4 hooks
- His Left Hook: 1 jab, 5 hooks
- Dreamland Express: 1 jab, 9 hooks or infinite hooks
Title Defense Mode[]
Mr. Sandman returns in Title Defense to challenge Mac and get his belt back. He has a new haircut, his clothes have a different color scheme, and he has a slightly altered moveset, all of which appear to be inspired by Mike Tyson. In his pre-match cutscene, Mr. Sandman is seen in front of a building, raging after seeing a poster of Little Mac as the new champion. He releases his anger by punching at the poster, destroying the entire building it was taped to, leaving a giant gap between two other buildings.
In addition to his old attacks, he also uses a "Wink Punch," during which he winks with either his left or his right eye, then throws an uppercut in the respective direction. These are likely to land on Mac if he either dodges in the wrong direction or ducks. He also has a mode which occurs only when he is knocked down twice in one round or three times in total during the entire match, in which he will throw an artillery of least 14 wink punches. However, dodging and/or surviving the series of hooks will cause him to get tired, giving Little Mac a chance to end the fight.
The player needs to be very careful not to get hit too many times as some of Mr. Sandman's punches can take out half of Mac's health bar. If the player tries to punch him right as he backs away to start the Dreamland Express, he'll throw a hook. What hand Mr. Sandman uses depends on what hand Mac used to punch at him. If he says, "HA!", he'll do a fast right hook, and if he says, "My turn!", he'll do a slow left hook. If Mac loses to him, the referee will try to raise Mr. Sandman's hand, but it won't budge. Instead, Sandman will raise his hand himself, lifting the referee with it.
Stars:
- Counter his overhead with a jab.
- Counter his delayed overhead with a jab.
- Counter his right hook with a hook.
- Counter his left hook with a jab.
- Land a delayed punch after his right hook. Left hooks will not work.
- Land a delayed hit after his left hook. Right hooks will not work.
- Hook him after the Dreamland Express.
- Jab him on his "Boo!" taunt.
- After he winks during his winking uppercut, but before he punches, jab him on the side he winked.
- When he’s tired from raging, punch him 3 times. Can be repeated for multiple stars.
He can do this once or twice before his Dreamland Express.
- Dreamland Express: Sandman's signature move. He steps to the back of the ring and shouts "Dreamland!" He might do one or two "Boo!" taunts, or none, before he steps back to the center and throws three fast, powerful, alternating uppercuts. The uppercuts are faster than they were in the first fight, and punching him early after the last uppercut only allows the player to land two extra punches while he is stunned. Attempting to punch Mr. Sandman before he finishes saying "Dreamland!" will cause him to dodge and use one of his counter hooks, after which he will immediately perform the three uppercuts regardless of whether or not the player dodged the hook and punched him. Which counter hook he uses depends on which hand they attempt to punch him with and the number of counter hooks he has done previously.
- Ha! (Right Counter Hook): Mr. Sandman says "Ha!" and throws a quick right hook that must be evaded by ducking or dodging to the left. He only uses this attack if the player attempts to punch him while he is saying "Dreamland!" prior to performing the Dreamland Express or if they attempt a jab just before he fully returns to the center after being knocked back by a hook.
- My Turn (Left Counter Hook): Mr. Sandman says "My turn!" and throws a left hook after a short delay. This attack can be avoided by ducking or dodging to the right, but if the player dodges early in expectation of the quicker Counter Hook, they will get hit. Mr. Sandman only uses this attack if the player attempts to punch him while he is saying "Dreamland!" prior to performing the Dreamland Express or if they attempt a jab just before he fully returns to the center after being knocked back by a hook.
- Wink Uppercut: Mr. Sandman winks and then throws an extremely fast uppercut. The side from which he punches is dependent on the eye with which he winks--if he winks with his left eye, he will throw a left uppercut; if he winks with his right, he will punch from his right. The player must dodge this attack to the same side he attacks from. Mr. Sandman uses this attack when the match begins and after each time that either he or Little Mac is knocked down. At the start of the match, Mr. Sandman throws two winking uppercuts, and each subsequent time he uses this move, he will add one more uppercut to the sequence. It is random which side Mr. Sandman starts the pattern on. Only the first one is random, the side the next ones are on is determined by his first uppercut. Do keep in mind however that every 4th wink punch, the next one will be on the same side as the last one. It can be dodged in the right way and cannot be ducked.
- Rage Uppercuts: Mr. Sandman only uses this move if he's been knocked down twice in one round or at least three times overall, after which he will use it each time he gets up from a knockdown. He will throw fourteen winking uppercuts, with short pauses between groups of two or three. The last uppercut will knock the player down instantly if it connects. If they manage to survive all of the uppercuts, Sandman will be put into an infinite stun, and they will gain a star for every third punch they land on him. It takes 13 normal punches or one Star Punch of any power to finish him in this state. If the player is knocked down during this attack, Sandman will switch back to his normal fighting style. However, once he begins this, for the remainder of the round, Mr. Sandman will change his style of defending so that the punches required for a stun and combo are reversed; instead of throwing a jab to stun him and then following up with hooks, the player must throw a hook to stun him and then follow up with jabs. This also applies when punishing any Counter Hooks that they provoke him to do during the sequence of fourteen winking uppercuts. It can be dodged and cannot be ducked.
Instant Knockdowns:
- Use a Star Punch on his Dreamland Express, when he does his "Boo!" taunt.
- Use a Star Punch as he's throwing his first "Dreamland Express" uppercut.
Instant Knockout:
- Use a Star Punch when he's recovering from his Rage Uppercuts.
Glitches:
- Gain at least 2 stars, and, after knocking down Mr. Sandman twice, use a Two or Three-Star Punch before he returns to center during his Rage Uppercuts for a TKO. The camera will be glitched during his fall.
- Punching him at a certain time during a Dreamland Express uppercut will result in Little Mac landing the Punch, but Mr. Sandman does not react and instead, continues to punch Little Mac.
Stun Limits:
- Any Non-Delayed attack: 1 jab, 3 hooks
- Any delayed attack: 1 jab, 4 hooks
- Dreamland Express: 1 jab, 6 hooks
Infinite Combo Trick:
Since a typical combo on Mr. Sandman ends with a hook, it creates an opportunity for the player to follow up with a delayed jab and provoke one of his counter hooks. They can then evade the counter hook and land another combo, which will give them another chance to provoke a counter hook. This cycle can be repeated until Mr. Sandman is knocked down. The type of counter hook Mr. Sandman uses (quick right or delayed left) depends on which hand the player attempts to jab him with and the number of counter hooks he has already performed. The first time they provoke a counter hook, if they jab with your right hand, he will counter with a delayed left hook, while if they jab with their left hand, he will counter with a quick right hook. The third time that the player provokes a counter hook, this will be reversed; a right jab will provoke a quick right hook, and a left jab will provoke a delayed left hook from Mr. Sandman. From this point on, the pattern repeats in a cycle of three.
Exhibition Challenges:[]
Contender:
- Win the fight and evade every Dreamland Express (3-Uppercut Combo).
- Find 7 different ways to earn Stars.
- Win the fight without dodging, ducking, or blocking a punch!
Title Defense:
- TKO Mr. Sandman in Round 1!
- Come back from almost being TKO'd or KO'd and defeat Mr. Sandman!
- Knock Mr. Sandman down in under 33 seconds!!
Rule Infractions[]
As per the unified rules of boxing established by the Association of Boxing Commissions and Combat Sports:
- It should be noted that out of all the Wii combatants who interact with the referee during the match, Mr. Sandman is the only one that doesn't attack the referee since he simply raises his fist while the referee is trying to lift it and ultimately didn't cause any harm to the referee. (when Mr. Sandman wins in Title Defense) However, he still earns half an infraction as he didn't let the referee raise his hand to signal his victory from the fight, although he might not have noticed or felt that the referee was trying to raise his hand.
- Mr. Sandman constantly taunts Little Mac throughout the match including after knocking the latter down, which is unsportsmanlike and disrespectful, though it's up to the referee to decide.
- He tells Little Mac to stand still when doing his Delayed Overhead. This can be seen as him trying to get Little Mac to throw the fight which isn't allowed.
- In Title Defense, he is shown with serious anger issues as he is seen destroying a building at the sight of Mac's face. Just like the other boxers with anger issues, Mr. Sandman wouldn't be able to compete until his mental health improves, as he could be at risk of killing his opponent during the match.
Mr. Sandman has 3 infractions.
Other Appearances[]
Super Smash Bros. series[]
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Super Smash Bros. for Wii U[]
In this game, Mr. Sandman appears as a trophy. He has two different descriptions depending on the game's region.
NA: This American boxer from Philadelphia is known for his speedy punches and brash style. He takes his name from a children's tale about a mythical character who brought sleep to people. When you face him in the ring, make sure you're the one sending him off to dreamland.
PAL: This American boxer from Philadelphia is known for his speedy punches and brash, straightforward style. His ring name comes from a German folk tale about a fairy who makes people fall asleep. When you face him in the ring, make sure he's the one who boards the express train to dreamland.
Merchandise[]
Mr. Sandman was featured in the Topps trading card series for Punch-Out!! (NES). He appeared on his own scratch-off card and on a tip card illustration featuring the heads of Don Flamenco, Von Kaiser, Glass Joe, and himself. Mr. Sandman was given a much lighter skin tone in these illustrations, effectively whitewashing him.

Trivia[]
General[]
- Mr. Sandman's character is based on the Sandman, a mythical character who spreads his magical sand on children to put them to sleep or bring them dreams. Mr. Sandman makes multiple references to sleep in his dialogue, as well as aiming to put his opponents to "sleep" by knocking them out. In addition, Z's will fly out from him when attacked in a stunned state in Punch-Out!! (Wii).
- Mr. Sandman, along with Bald Bull and Super Macho Man, has been featured as an opponent in more Punch-Out!! games than any other character. His only absence is the arcade version of Super Punch-Out!!.
- Mr. Sandman is one of three boxers to have only one loss, the others being Super Macho Man and Piston Hondo.
Punch-Out!! (arcade)[]
- Mr. Sandman wears yellow gloves and is the champion. This may be a reference to the Golden Gloves, a type of annual amateur boxing contest held in the United States. Also, said tournament allows contenders aged 16 and older. This would take an infraction off of Mac, as he is 17; if the W.V.B.A uses that rule.
Punch-Out!! (NES)[]
- When fighting Mr. Sandman, it is possible to gain stars in the third round with the correct strategy, but the time window is so short that it is impossible when using the normal timing on most emulators and other modern displays.
- He cannot be beaten by decision normally, but if the game is hacked and the points required to win by decision are reduced, his regular standing sprite and his stunned sprite will combine in a glitched fashion if the player wins.
- He is depicted with white skin in the Topps illustrations.
Super Punch-Out!! (SNES)[]
- The instruction booklet inaccurately lists Mr. Sandman as being from New York City.
- He has a virtually permanent snarl, only grinning if he wins by KO.
- He is one of the few boxers who doesn't have their dizzy animation reused by another boxer in the game.
- In the North American and PAL versions of the game, Super Macho Man and Mr. Sandman's stats are changed, while Mr. Sandman's age is changed as well making him younger than what he was in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out/Punch-Out featuring Mr. Dream.
- He is hardcoded to be impossible to KO, meaning that even using cheats, he cannot be KO'd.
- The perfect time against Mr. Sandman is 0'13"13 in the NTSC version, first achieved by zallard1, and 0'13"09 in the PAL version, first achieved by MeLeeak.
Punch-Out!! (Wii)[]
- Mr. Sandman seems to be heavily associated with the number 13, which is associated with bad luck and misfortune in many Western cultures.
- His full nickname (Mister Sandman) has 13 letters, and begins with "M", the thirteenth letter of the alphabet.
- Mr. Sandman is the thirteenth opponent fought by Little Mac.
- In addition, Little Mac has 13 hearts of stamina in both fights.
- Mr. Sandman's introduction slideshow in Contender, being the only one in the entire game to exceed four frames, has 13 frames.
- When Mr. Sandman gets tired after the Rage Uppercuts in Title Defense, the player only needs to use 13 more regular punches in order to defeat him.
- In Title Defense mode, Mr. Sandman has 13 different star opportunities.
- His height is 6' 5''. The similarly written number 6.5 is half of 13.
- He is 31 years old and had 31 previous fights in his career; by switching the digits of this number, the result is the number 13, although in Super Punch-Out!! Which is apparently a sequel to Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! He's 29 meaning he may have lied on his boxing license although this could be a retcon.
- In addition to the above, Mr. Sandman's boxing record bears similarity to Muhammad Ali's, both being undefeated at 31-0 before meeting their first loss to become 31-1. He also shares his record with Mike Tyson in the original game. The digits in the number 31 can be switched to get 13.
- Interestingly, the theoretically perfect time for beating him in Super Punch-Out!! (SNES) is coincidentally 13.13 seconds.
- Mr. Sandman's references to bad luck are in stark contrast to Aran Ryan's constant references to the number 7, which indicates good luck.
- If Little Mac loses his title against Mr. Sandman in Title Defense (excluding Exhibition mode), his cutscene before the match will change to the same one seen in Contender, however he does not look down during his walk. He is the only fighter known to do this.
- In addition to this, he will also be holding his belt instead of being the belt in front of him like the other TD opponents (possibly because he is in the middle and not the corner like everyone else).
- He and Doc Louis are both voiced by Riley Inge.
- In Punch-Out!! (Wii), the music that plays during his fights is the only theme that is played in both Career and Exhibition Modes. This is due to the fact that his music is a more intense version of the World Circuit theme, and thus this plays during both fights with Mr. Sandman in Career Mode. However, due to this also being his own theme, as part of each fighter in the game getting their own arrangement of the Punch-Out!! main theme, it also plays during the Exhibition Mode.
- In Punch-Out!! (Wii) his attire seems to be based upon two other Punch-Out!! titles. His Contender outfit looks like the outfit he wears in Super Punch-Out!!, with the only difference being the color of his boots, going from green in Super Punch-Out!! to black in Punch-Out!! (Wii). His Title Defense outfit looks similar to the outfit Mike Tyson wears in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, with the exception of the gloves, going from red to black.
- In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Super Macho Man's spirit is ranked higher than Mr. Sandman's, even though he is shown to have defeated Macho in Punch-Out!! (Wii) to become the WVBA World Champion of that game. This is likely because Super Macho Man is a higher-ranked boxer in more Punch-Out!! titles than Mr. Sandman, outranking him in both Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! and Super Punch-Out!! for the SNES, as well as being the WVBA World Champion of the arcade version of Super Punch-Out!! in which Mr. Sandman was absent.
- In the NTSC-J version of the Wii game, his Contender intro animation includes a "swoosh" sound effect. In that same version, his win animation has a different voice clip when compared to the NTSC-U and PAL versions.
- He's the only boxer in the World Circuit who does not do something that would get him being banned for life. Aran Ryan, Super Macho Man, and Bald Bull would be banned for attacking the referee, while Soda Popinski would be banned for doping, although he would still get his boxing license revoked for destroying a building.
- He is also one of two boxers who adheres closest to the real-life rules of boxing. The other is Piston Hondo, though the latter is primarily guilty of bringing foreign objects into the ring.
