Little Mac losing to Soda Popinski by decision

Decision

The referee carefully considers the winner in Punch-Out!! (Wii)

A Split Decision happens when both Little Mac and the opponent last three rounds without being KO'd or TKO'd. When this happens, the referee steps in and thinks for a moment. After this, he will raise his arm and point to either the left (Little Mac) or the right (Opponent). Sometimes, he will look like he points to one boxer, but he then swings his arm and points to the other. His decision is final and cannot be overturned. In the NES game, when this occurs, Little Mac will act as if he has won if the referee points to him, but the opponent will do this if the referee points to them.

The player can hear heavy breathing and a heart beating in the background.

NES Punch-Out!! Win By Decision Point List[]

Rule Infractions[]

As per the unified rules of boxing established by the Association of Boxing Commissions and Combat Sports:

  • It is unclear how this is allowed at all. The way it's supposed to work is that three judges write numbers on cards to determine the winner (Split if two score for one and the third for the other, Majority, ditto but the third judge scores a tie, and Unanimous if all three score for the same fighter and draws for the same three above, but ties), Though this could be based of 'Technical Decision' as there are no judges anywhere to be found.

The Decision mechanic has 1 infraction.

Trivia[]

  • In the NES version of Punch-Out!!, to win by decision, Little Mac must acquire a certain score (Ex: 5000 points in the match against Glass Joe).
  • Not all fights can be won by decision. Title Bouts, King Hippo, and Mr. Sandman in the NES version will always be decided in their favor.
  • In the NES version of Punch-Out!!, if won by decision against King Hippo (via modifying the required points for decision), he will do his win animation instead of his stun sprite.
  • In the SNES version of Super Punch-Out!!, the player automatically loses if the fight lasts a full round.
  • In the Wii version of Punch-Out!!, knockdowns or health left determine the winner, with health being the decider only if both fighters have the same number of knockdowns.
  • In the Wii version of Punch Out!!, Glass Joe has a Contender challenge that involves knocking him down three times, but then losing to him by decision.
