This article is a quality article.

Super Macho Man has made multiple video game appearances; his first appearance was as the WVBA World Champ in the arcade version of Super Punch-Out!! in 1984. Later, he became the very last boxer to fight against in the Japan-only, limited-edition, Famicom gold cartridge game simply called Punch-Out!!. Next, when Mike Tyson became the final boxer to fight against in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (and later, Mr. Dream in Punch-Out!! featuring Mr. Dream), Super Macho Man became the champion of the World Circuit. His next appearance was when he became champion of the World Circuit in 1994's Super Punch-Out!! for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. In his latest appearance on Punch-Out!! (Wii), he appears as the #1 contender in the World Circuit. He is a stereotypical bodybuilder, taunting Little Mac by flexing his pectoral muscles in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, and incorporating his exercise routines into his powerful attacks in the SNES Super Punch-Out!!.

His offense is similar to that of Soda Popinski (given that in most his 2D appearances he was in, he was a palette swap of Soda Popinski) with big uppercuts and hooks, except he has his own attack, the clothesline. He utilizes two versions of this punch; for the first one he simply spins around 360 degrees with his arms outstretched and throws a quick haymaker at Little Mac. The second is a stronger one that occurs once he gets up from being knocked down; this time he moves back a bit and then keeps spinning around seemingly until Mac can no longer dodge. Like the Bull Charge of Bald Bull, this one can also floor Mac in one strike.

In the picture during profile mode in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, Super Macho Man is tanned and has grey hair, but in the actual game, he has pale skin and black hair. This inconsistent appearance only occurs in the NES versions (due to limitations of the time).

The music played for Super Macho Man in Punch-Out!! (NES) (also used for Von Kaiser and Great Tiger) is a quote from the classical composition "Ride of the Valkyries", though in the Wii version of Punch-Out!!, it is a short piece of music reminiscent of 60s music. Super Macho Man was also featured as a Hasbro action figure, in a Topps trading card series and in Valiant Comics Nintendo Comics System, appearing in the story "Fox and Hounds."

Appearances[]

Super Punch-Out!! (1984)[]

Super Macho Man's first appearance was as the WVBA World Champion in the arcade version of Super Punch-Out!! in 1984. He's extremely strong and uses a 360 degree punch to defeat the player. This attack will knock the player down and the only way to avoid it is by ducking. He fights a lot like the other fighters except that he punches a lot more often, and he'll use his spin punch a lot.

Before the fight, he does his spin and flexes his muscles at the screen.

His palette swap is Vodka Drunkenski.

Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!/Punch-Out Featuring Mr. Dream (1987 & 1990)[]

Super macho mannn

In Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! Super Macho Man became World Circuit Champion. His attacks are similar to Soda Popinski's. He will spin around 3-11 times in a row when he does his Super Spin Punch, but it doesn't require the player to duck as in all of the other Punch-Out!! games. His attacks are much slower than they were in Super Punch-Out!!, however. He is the last opponent in the gold Game Pak version.

Super Macho Man is a palette swap of Soda Popinski, with whom he shares his laugh.

Attacks:

  • Hook: Super Macho Man throws a hook. This can be dodged, blocked or ducked.
  • Uppercut: Super Macho Man either immediately throws an uppercut, or shuffles before throwing the uppercut.
  • Spin Punch: Super Macho Man stands still for a moment, then spins around and punches. Unlike the other games, this can be dodged to the side. Ducking it is still possible.
  • Super Spin Punch: Super Macho Man moves left, then Spin Punches a random number of times. These will instantly knock Little Mac down.

Super Punch-Out!! (1994)[]

Sprite super macho man02

He once again returned in Super Punch-Out!! as the World Circuit Champion. He's weaker than in the previous games. He attacks almost exactly like in the old games but he uses fewer ordinary attacks and more one-hit knockdown attacks, as well using his training programs as attacks against the player.

He is the palette swap of Masked Muscle and also holds the same W/L records as Mr. Sandman, with a total of 29 wins and 3 losses. A possible typo in this game is that when the player fights him in Championship mode, as well as in Time Attack mode, he is labelled "Super Machoman", leaving out the space.

Moves:

  • Jab: Super Macho Man does a jab.
  • Hook: Super Macho Man does a hook.
  • Uppercut: A standard uppercut.
  • Spin Punch: Super Macho Man quickly spins around and attempts to punch. This must be ducked.
  • Multiple Spin Punch: Super Macho Man will move back, and spin a random amount of times. All of these can knock the player down.
  • "Exercise Program _!": When the cornerman says this (with A, B, or C replacing the underline), Super Macho Man will do a series of moves. A is four jabs, B is three hooks, and C is three uppercuts.

Dizzy Knockdown: Super Macho Man will go back, and then forward. Hit him when he is centered.

Opponent Debug Commands:

Super Macho Man still jumps to the side periodically.

Punch-Out!! (2009)[]

Super Macho Man returns in Punch-Out!! (Wii) in the World Circuit, but for the first time ever, is not the World Circuit champion, only the #1 contender of the circuit. He mostly uses attacks that take a lot of effort to avoid and do a lot of damage such as his trademark attack, the triple clothesline which takes away half of Little Mac's health for every punch. He always uses three in a row and he'll say "Super... Macho... MAN!!" and his glasses will start to glow before using it so it's generally detectable.

In his slideshow, he is shown to be a popular boxer in Hollywood, constantly being followed by paparazzi and signing autographs while working out and going on dates. During battle, he even strikes a pose for his fans every now and then (even saying "Photo Op" before doing it) and Mac can earn a star if he punches him in the face while posing. It was also known that Super Macho Man was one of the people who was knocked out by Mr. Sandman during his rise to being the champion. (In fact, according to his win record in Career mode, Mr. Sandman was his only loss.) He will taunt you by yelling "Stay down!" if he knocks you down. If you lose to him, he will flex his muscles then he says to Little Mac "Welcome...to MY world" and then grabs the ladder of the helicopter, flex one more time and exit the ring.

He speaks with somewhat of a valley-boy lingo (which is reinforced by the fact that, when fighting him, the soundtrack has a 60s music arrangement) and seems to think extremely highly of himself, believing that he can't lose to Little Mac. His voice is provided by Mike Inglehart.

Contender[]

Stars:

  • Dodge his crunch time uppercut to the left, and after the stun ends, land two delayed jabs.
  • Land a delayed hit after dodging his Delayed Uppercut.
  • Jab him right after he says "Op" during his Photo Op taunt.

Attacks:

  • Crunch Time (Right Uppercut): Macho throws a fast right uppercut. Says "Crunch! Time!" before throwing it. Finish the stun with a jab and land two more jabs for a star. (Dodge in his direction)
  • Delayed Left Uppercut: Macho throws a delayed right uppercut. Land a delayed hit after a dodge for a star.
  • Clothesline: Macho does a single clothesline spin with his right arm.
  • Pump It (Right Hook): He will move to Mac's left, put his gloves together while bending his elbows, shout "Pump! It!" and perform a right hook.
  • Photo Op (Taunt): He puts his hands to his hips and says a "Photo op!" whilst wiggling his head. Jab him when he wiggles his head for a star.
  • Triple Clothesline: Macho's signature move. He will step to the back of the ring and yells "Super! Macho!! MAN!!" then performs three clotheslines. Avoid by ducking.

Instant Knockdown:

  • When Super Macho Man does the Triple Clothesline, dodge the first two spins, then throw a One to Two-Star Punch.

Instant Knockout:

  • When Super Macho Man does the Triple Clothesline, dodge the first two spins, then throw a Three star Punch.

Glitch: Do two frame perfect punches when he is about to do the triple clothesline (one to cancel his poses, another to cancel the clotheslines) and he will remain idle until the round ends or a star punch is landed.

Infinite combo trick:

After Super Macho Man finishes his Triple Clothesline, land 8 punches in a combo. When he leans to one side, land an opposite jab and he will twirl to the other side. When this happens land another opposite jab. Continue this pattern to knock him down. This trick does not work in Title Defense.

Stun Limits:

  • His Right Uppercut (if dodged left): 4 plus 2 delayed jabs
  • His Right Uppercut (if dodged right) 3 plus 2 delayed jabs
  • His Left Uppercut (if dodged right): 4 plus 2 delayed jabs
  • His Left Uppercut (if dodged left): 3 plus 2 delayed jabs
  • His Clothesline: 5 plus 2 delayed jabs
  • His Hook (if ducked): 3 plus 2 delayed jabs
  • His Hook (if dodged): 4 plus 2 delayed jabs
  • His Triple Clothesline: 9 plus delayed jabs until he is knocked down

Title Defense Mode[]

Super Macho Man returns in Title Defense to fight Little Mac once again and get the World Circuit belt. His trunks, boots, and glasses are now dark blue, and he has more hair. He has a new fighting scheme, but his punches are pretty much the same as before except that he has increased attack speed, and his punches do more damage. He taunts more often, but getting the star off all three taunts requires good timing and knowing when to attack. If Super Macho Man blocks before doing a taunt, he will counter with a Hook. His Triple Clothesline in Title Defense Mode is faster and much harder to avoid but it will still knock you down immediately if you get hit. He doesn't have an Instant Knockdown in Title Defense. In the introductory slideshow, it is revealed that Little Mac has taken away Super Macho Man's spotlight and fame, much to his annoyance. However, if Mac loses to him, the spotlight goes to him now and he says, "Oh now you love me" as he steps away from the spotlight as it now follows him twice. At first, he says, "Well it's too late." but he suddenly says, "Maybe not!" as he proceeds to flex 3 times in the spotlight. However, when Super Macho Man becomes champion, the audience boos at him still on subsequent rematches.

Glitch: When he does his triple spin attack, instead of ducking the first time, throw a star punch. If it hits and is timed correctly he won't do anything except stand there and block your attacks until the next round. (Alternatively, dodge the first punch, then throw the Star Punch before his second punch. If timed correctly, the glitch will still occur.)

Stars:

  • Land two delayed hits after finishing his Hang Ten stun.
  • Land a delayed hit after dodging his Delayed Uppercut.
  • Jab him during his Flex taunt.
  • Hook him when he looks at you during the Work It taunt.
  • Hook him before he flexes during his Feel the Burn taunt.

Attacks:

  • Pump It (Right Hook): He will move to Mac's left, put his gloves together while bending his elbows, and do a right hook.
  • Release the Beast (Left Spinning Uppercut): He will move to Mac's right side and do a jumping left-handed uppercut.
  • Wipe Out (Delayed Right Spinning Uppercut): He will move to Mac's left side and do a delayed jumping right-handed uppercut.
  • Hang Ten (Right Uppercut): He will move to Mac's left side and do a quick right-handed uppercut. (Dodge in his direction)
  • Delayed Left Uppercut: A delayed uppercut. Land a delayed hit after a dodge for a star.
  • Clothesline: A single clothesline spin.
  • Triple Clothesline: The same as it is in Contender, though there's no camera flash, and the punches come faster and knock you down if you get hit.
  • Flex It (Taunt): Macho does a Side Chest pose. Jab him for a star. (Note: He will always do this for the first time at the beginning of every fight.)
  • Work It (Taunt): Macho does a Front Double Biceps pose. Hook him when he looks at you for a star. (Note: He will always do this for the first time after he gets up from being knocked down once.)
  • Feel the Burn (Taunt): Macho does a Front Lat Spread pose. Jab him before he flexes for a star. (Note: He will always do this for the first time after he gets up from being knocked down twice.)

  • His Spinning Uppercuts: 4 plus 3 delayed jabs
  • His Triple Clothesline: 8 plus 3 delayed jabs

Exhibition Challenges[]

Contender:

  1. Win the fight and evade EVERY Clothesline attack!
  2. Find 3 different ways to earn Stars.
  3. Defeat Super Macho Man in Round 1!

Title Defense:

  1. Find 5 different ways to earn Stars.
  2. Defeat Super Macho Man in Round 1 and NEVER earn a Star!
  3. Win the fight in under 2 minutes...

Rule Infractions[]

As per the unified rules of boxing established by the Association of Boxing Commissions and Combat Sports:

  • Super Macho Man wears earrings during fights, which are banned for the boxer's safety, and must be removed before the fight starts.
  • Normally, hair tails are allowed in boxing as long as they are short enough, but Macho Man's hair tail is too long to be approvable, meaning he needs to remove some of his hair, or style it differently.
  • His gold chain counts as an illegal accessory.
  • Instead of boxing shorts, he wears wrestling trunks.
  • His trunks have personal branding on them, which is strictly forbidden.
  • Instead of boxing shoes or boxing boots, he wears wrestling boots.
  • Between rounds, he answers questions from the press. This violates rules regarding the press being near the ring.
  • The camera he uses during corner breaks is a personal electronic and is forbidden.
  • The sunglasses he dons while attempting to land the Triple Clothesline in Contender count as an illegal accessory.
    • He also flaunts these to the press during corner breaks, which is bringing a foreign object into the ring.
  • There appears to be outside interference during the aforementioned clothesline. The camera flash in the crowd only gets particularly bright when he puts his sunglasses on, so these sunglasses could serve as a signal to those operating the cameras to flash bright lights and cause Mac to make a mistake he wouldn't have otherwise.
  • During the start of the next round in Contender Mode, he pushes the referee aside. Attacking the referee in real life boxing will result in the offender getting a temporary ban from boxing.
  • After his clothesline spin, he shows his back. In boxing, you're not allowed to reveal your back as it is considered throwing the fight, which isn't allowed.
  • His clotheslines are not punches with the clenched fist, but an attack with the side of his hand. In boxing, the only attacks allowed are those performed with the front of the fist.
  • In a unique case of infractions, the lighting operator constantly moves the spotlight away from Super Macho Man as he attempts to use it during his Title Defense intro, which is not allowed.
  • Speaking of unique infractions, the crowd is throwing food and trash at Macho Man. This is throwing foreign objects in the ring, which is not allowed.
  • His flexing is disrespectful to the match and the opponent. Though, it's up to the ref to decide.
  • His spinning uppercuts in Title Defense has him showing his back. This counts as throwing the match for reasons explained above.
  • During his uppercut attacks in the NES game, it shows that he is taking a knee to prepare. Taking a knee is considered a down.

Super Macho Man has 18.5 infractions and is the victim of 2.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

The Wii depiction of Super Macho Man appears as a summonable spirit in Smash Bros. Ultimate. He is tied with Giga Mac with the most powerful Punch Out spirit, referring to his role as the WVBA World Champ in games before the Wii.

Trivia[]

General[]

  • Super Macho Man is the only boxer in the Punch-Out!! series with three words in his boxer name.
  • Although a "Clothesline" is an actual wrestling move, Super Macho Man's Clothesline Spin is more similar to a haymaker punch, in which a boxer "whips" his arm around with minimal elbow bend. This move is usually considered illegal in real life, as it is powerful and leaves the user wide open should it whiff.
  • Super Macho Man and Soda Popinski both have five syllables in their names.
    • They also both wear wrestling trunks and wrestling shoes instead of the traditional boxing outfit.
  • Super Macho Man is the only boxer to be the champion of the World Circuit in all of his appearances, counting before the events of Punch-Out!! (Wii).

Super Punch-Out!! (1984)[]

  • Despite having his correct name written under his portrait, the game's announcer in the japanese version announces him as "Super Body Build".

Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!/Punch-Out!! featuring Mr. Dream[]

  • Super Macho Man has a chance of saying "I work on my tan harder than I'll have to work on you!" between rounds. However, his in-game sprite doesn't seem to be tanned at all (likely due to sprite limitations).
  • Although Super Macho Man's usual depiction is of a stereotypical bodybuilder, he doesn't seem to have this look in this game. This is likely either due to sprite limitations or him being a palette swap of Soda Popinski to save space on the cartridge.
  • Super Macho Man, Soda Popinski, Bald Bull, and Mr. Sandman use the same laugh that was used by Ganon in the game over screen in Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.
    • During his laugh animation, whether it was due to sprite limitations or not, Super Macho Man laughs without opening his mouth.
  • The newspaper in the cutscene for winning the World Championship has Super Macho Man placing a lost and found request relating to his belt. It says: "Where is my belt".
  • His hair is silver in his profile picture, but it's black during the fight. This was probably due to technical limitations of the NES/Famicom.
  • It is possible to dodge Super Macho Man’s Spin Punches, no matter which side the player is dodging.

Super Punch-Out!! (1994)[]

  • This is the only Punch-Out!! game where Super Macho Man is not a palette swap of Soda Popinski, due to Popinski not appearing in the game. However, Super Macho Man is still a palette swap of another character, being Masked Muscle.
  • Super Macho Man, Heike Kagero and Mr. Sandman are the only opponents in the game that can get up at the count of 1.
  • Highlighting Super Macho Man's image on the hidden Free Match screen, holding L and pressing right will move the cursor off him and onto a hidden button. Pressing START will activate the credits. They will act like the player has beaten every circuit without losing, and every boxer has the "YOUR BEST" time set to 3 minutes. The player's name will be set to *Unknown, and their record will be 0 wins and 0 losses.
  • The perfect time against Super Machoman is 0'09"43 in the NTSC version, first achieved by zallard1, and 0'09"31 in the PAL version, first achieved by Cranklinson.

Punch-Out!! (Wii)[]

  • When Super Macho Man poses during his fight, he performs several bodybuilding poses in real life:
    • The successive poses before his Triple Clothesline are the Side Chest, Back Double Biceps and an unknown pose.
    • His Flex It taunt also has him perform a Side Chest pose.
    • His Work It taunt has him perform a Front Double Biceps pose.
    • His Feel the Burn taunt has him perform a variant of the Most Muscular pose.
  • As with Don Flamenco, Super Macho Man is popular with the ladies and paparazzi. However, much like Aran Ryan, the crowd boos him, even when he wins the match. During Title Defense Mode, he tries to get himself under the spotlight, but once he gets under it, the light moves away from him; he is also thrown food and garbage.
    • Ironically, if the player loses to him in Title Defense, Super Macho Man moves away from the spotlight twice before basking in it.
  • Despite the fact Super Macho Man had lost against Mr. Sandman in the championship, he still had the fame, ladies, and paparazzi following him, whereas after he lost against Little Mac, he seemed to have a lot of that taken away from him. A possible reason for this is that he was expected to beat Little Mac with ease, but when he fought Mr. Sandman, Super Macho Man's fans were expecting him to be defeated.
  • During his round intermissions, the audience seems to be cheering for him. This contrasts with the usual negative reception he is met with.
  • Super Macho Man is, along with Mr. Sandman, the only character in Contender Mode to have a changed record, from 35-0 to 35-1. The one loss was to Sandman himself, who up to that point, had no losses. He also gains a second loss in TD mode, much like Sandman in earlier games.
  • In Mr. Sandman's bio, along with Don Flamenco, Aran Ryan, Soda Popinski and Bald Bull, Super Macho Man is shown to be in the middle of delivering a punch when Sandman knocked him out.
  • For some unknown reason, Little Mac disappears during Super Macho Man’s KO/TKO animation.
  • In Title Defense, he is the only opponent in the entire game to not have an instant-knockdown opportunity nor an instant-knockout opportunity.
  • His Title Defense appearance is similar to that when he appeared in the SNES version of Super Punch-Out!!.
  • Super Macho Man, Aran Ryan, and Bald Bull are the only boxers to attack the Referee. In between rounds in Contender Mode, Macho Man pushes the ref out of the way.
  • In Punch-Out!! (Wii), his signature move consists of him spinning around a fixed number of times (three). In earlier games, it involves him spinning around a random number of times.
  • In the files of the Wii game, Super Macho Man has three unused animations:
    • The first one is internally called "Pec Tell", which consists of Super Macho Man doing his Contender taunt pose, but the beginning is different (he moves his pectoral muscles with his hand) and it ends with his Triple Clothesline windup. This is where his unused "Curtain Call" line was supposed to be.
    • His other two are fake out uppercuts. They involve him getting into position for his left uppercut, but he raises an arm and does a spinning uppercut with the corresponding arm. These animations are called "LeftFake" and "RightFake" internally. This is where his unused "Psych, baby" line was supposed to be.
